Semillon is a fascinating white grape that often flies under the radar. Young, it can present with a deceivingly simple profile of crisp citrus notes, especially lemon and lime. However, its true beauty lies in its age-worthiness. With time, Semillon transforms, developing complex layers of honeyed richness, toasted nuts, and a distinctive lanolin character. Its naturally high acidity provides the backbone for this evolution, resulting in wines with remarkable longevity and finesse.
In the world-renowned sweet wines of Sauternes, its susceptibility to botrytis cinerea ("noble rot") contributes to luscious, intensely flavored dessert wines. Whether dry or sweet, Semillon is a wine that rewards patience and offers a compelling journey for the discerning palate.
Colour of light straw yellow in its youth, this wine will develop rich yellowing over time. Strong candied apricot, marmalade and rind characters are powerful while subtle citrus and oak spice add to the complexity with Botrytis undertones.
