New South Wales is a richly varied wine state, home to both Australia’s oldest wine region and a host of dynamic emerging areas. The Hunter Valley, north of Sydney, is the most iconic, celebrated for its uniquely age-worthy Semillon, along with earthy Shiraz and elegant Chardonnay. Inland, Mudgee produces robust red wines—notably Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot—while the Orange region, set on the slopes of an extinct volcano, offers high-altitude Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Noir with vibrant acidity.
The Hilltops and Canberra District (spanning into the ACT) are gaining acclaim for cool-climate Shiraz and Riesling, while Tumbarumba, tucked in the Snowy Mountains, is emerging as a source of fine sparkling wines and Burgundian varietals. With climates ranging from maritime to alpine, New South Wales showcases a broad spectrum of wine styles and continues to evolve as one of Australia’s most exciting and innovative wine-producing states.
