The Peel wine region, located just south of Perth in Western Australia, is a small but distinctive wine-producing area known for its warm Mediterranean climate and proximity to the Indian Ocean. Centred around the town of Mandurah and extending inland to the Darling Scarp, the region features a variety of soil types, including gravelly loams and laterite, which support a diverse range of grape varieties.
Shiraz is the standout varietal here, often displaying bold, spicy characteristics, but the region also produces quality Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and alternative varietals like Verdelho. Peel’s combination of coastal influence and inland elevation allows for a balance of ripe fruit flavors and natural acidity. Although relatively young and less commercially prominent than some other Australian wine regions, Peel is gaining recognition for its innovative producers and expressive, climate-driven wines.
