Grenache, also known as Garnacha in Spain, is a versatile and widely planted red grape variety prized for its ripe fruit character, generous alcohol levels, and soft tannins. Typically producing medium- to full-bodied wines, Grenache is known for flavours of juicy red berries—especially strawberry and raspberry—along with spicy notes, hints of white pepper, and subtle herbal undertones.
It thrives in warm, dry climates and is a key component in many celebrated blends, such as those from the Southern Rhône (like Châteauneuf-du-Pape) and Spain’s Priorat region. On its own, Grenache can produce plush, approachable wines, though older vines and careful winemaking can result in wines of surprising depth and complexity. It also plays an important role in rosé production, particularly in Provence.
