Mount Majura Vineyard, perched on the eastern slopes of Majura Valley just minutes from Canberra, is a pioneering, family-owned winery—actually the first to be established within the ACT in 1988, thanks to the vision of Dr. Edgar Riek and Mrs Dinny Killen. Nestled at around 660–700m altitude on red volcanic soils enriched with limestone, the site offers natural frost protection and a climate ideally suited to Mediterranean varieties like Tempranillo, which has become the vineyard’s flagship, alongside standout Riesling and Shiraz.
Today, under the care of winemaker Dr. Frank van de Loo and viticulturist Leo Quirk, Mount Majura exemplifies terroir-driven, sustainable viticulture, continuing to introduce intriguing varietals such as Graciano, Mondeuse, and Touriga to the Canberra District. The relaxed cellar door experience—with seated tastings, produce plates, vineyard “gumboot tours,” and sweeping views—makes it a must-visit for both serious wine lovers and curious visitors alike.
