Wine Storage Tips Storing Wine

Enjoying wine at home doesn’t require a cellar or sommelier training — just a few simple principles that help your wine taste exactly as the winemaker intended. .

Whether you’re saving a bottle for a special occasion or opening one tonight, here’s how to store and serve wine properly.

Storing Wine at Home

Proper storage protects wine from heat, light and movement — the main factors that can cause it to spoil prematurely..

1. Keep it cool and consistent

Wine prefers a stable temperature. Ideally, store bottles between 12–18°C. Avoid places where temperatures fluctuate, such as kitchens, garages or near appliances. Consistency matters more than being perfectly cool.

2. Store bottles away from light

Direct sunlight and strong artificial light can damage wine over time. A dark cupboard, wine fridge or shaded shelf is best — especially for sparkling and white wines.

3. Lay bottles on their side (for cork closures)

Storing bottles horizontally keeps the cork moist, preventing it from drying out and letting air into the bottle. Wines with screw caps can be stored upright without issue.

4. Minimise movement

Wine prefers to rest. Avoid storing bottles in places that are frequently moved or vibrate, such as on top of a fridge.

5. Know what’s meant to age — and what’s not

Most wines available today are made to be enjoyed within a few years of purchase. If you’re unsure, enjoy it sooner rather than later.

Serving Wine At Home

Serving Wine At Home

Serving wine at the right temperature and in the right way can make a noticeable difference to flavour and aroma.

1. Serve at the right temperature

Sparkling Wine: 6 - 8°C

White & Rosé: 8 - 12°C

Light Reds: 12 - 14°C

Full-Bodied Reds: 16 - 18°C

Wine Serving Tips

2. Don’t overfill the glass

Fill glasses about one-third full. This allows room to swirl, releasing aromas and enhancing the tasting experience.

3. Let wine breathe (when needed)

Some red wines benefit from exposure to air. Opening the bottle 20–30 minutes before serving — or using a decanter — can soften tannins and open up aromas.

4. Use the right glassware

While you don’t need a different glass for every style, a decent-quality wine glass helps concentrate aromas and keeps the wine at the right temperature.

Storing Open Bottles

Once opened, wine begins to oxidise — but a little care can extend its life.

  • Re-cork or reseal tightly
  • Store in the fridge - even for reds
  • Use within:

Sparkling wine: 1 - 2 days (with a proper stopper)

White & Rosé: 2 - 3 days

Red wine: 3 - 5 days
