Clonakilla Wines, founded in 1971 by Dr. John Kirk in Murrumbateman just north of Canberra, is a pioneering, family-owned winery and one of Australia’s most revered. It gained significant renown for introducing the Shiraz‑Viognier co‑fermentation style to Australia in 1992—a blend that has since become iconic and helped put Canberra District on the global wine map. Under the stewardship of winemaker Tim Kirk, Clonakilla crafts small‑batch, cool‑climate wines with a clear focus on terroir expression.
Their legendary Shiraz‑Viognier flagship is celebrated as a national benchmark, classified as “Exceptional” in Langton’s and frequently hailed as one of the country's greatest wines. The estate also produces elegant Riesling, Viognier, and a range of other cool‑climate varietals, all grown on elevated, ancient granitic soils with warm days and cool nights shaping the wines’ clarity, finesse, and structure.
